How to Navigate Change in Remote Teams

Struggling to keep your remote teams in rhythm during a time of transition or change? You’re not alone—and unfortunately, change is a constant when it comes to business.

We know that the stress that so often accompanies these transitions can overwhelm even the most seasoned business leaders. That’s why we’ve put together this helpful list of best practices that will keep your team flowing in perfect harmony.

1. Set the Tempo for Change

If you want everyone to play in sync, you have to establish a clear beat from the start. Think of it as setting your team’s “tempo” for success. When you take the time to do this, your team will know exactly where you’re headed—and they’ll buy into the concept of teamwork, group movement, and harmony.

If you’re not sure where to start, we recommend that you communicate via consistent channels like team huddles, one-on-ones, and written updates where appropriate. Transparency and collaborative communication are key to ensuring that everyone’s on-tempo—and you’ll avoid the dissonance that comes from miscommunication and misunderstandings.

2. Give Your Team Space for Solos

As you help your team learn how to navigate change, it’s important to leave them plenty of room for solo work. After all, each team member has their own unique role in this ensemble, and it’s important to help them feel heard during times of change and transition.

Managers can accomplish this by giving their team members ample space to contribute ideas and “own” specific pieces of the transition within their departments and scopes. This ownership transforms them from passive listeners into active creators of the team’s melody, building accountability and adding depth and harmony to the process. Further down the line, this also creates a collaborative environment in which team members are able to effectively receive and provide feedback without misunderstandings or conflicts.

3. Fine-Tune Your Listening Skills

Active listening is the art of ensuring no note goes unheard. By tuning into individual concerns, you build a sense of trust that aligns the group as they learn how to navigate change.

Intentional listening evolves into a positive feedback loop that allows team members to feel seen and valued—giving you an essential foundation of trust that will combat attrition and strain as the period of change unfolds.

4. Encourage Adaptability to Keep the Beat Flowing

Change is often unpredictable, which is why it’s important to encourage resilience as you keep your team moving. Just as musicians adjust to tempo shifts, adaptable team members bring flexibility and patience to each stage of your transition, helping to create buy-in with other team members and serving as positive role models and change advocates.

If your team has difficulty in this area, consider offering workshops or resources that build natural resilience skills. Over time, these resources can go a long way in helping each team member handle the unexpected without missing a beat.
